apocalypsos: (i am surprised by you)

Okay, so unless the Terence Malick movie, the Woody Allen movie, or the 9/11 precocious-child movie -- three descriptions which make me cringe just thinking about them -- are phenomenal, this is the movie I want to win Best Picture.

Granted, I suspect "The Artist" is more likely to win. "Hugo"'s this beautiful grand wonderful epic movie about loving movies, and about loving making movies, and about everything that makes people in Hollywood twitch happily. It's also the kind of movie that's so much better seen on a big screen in 3D. (This is the only movie other than "Avatar" I've ever liked in 3D, and that one was because the movie had nothing else going for it but the visuals.) "The Artist" is a fantastic screener movie, a great film to snuggle up under a blanket and watch with a bowl of popcorn. It's between those two films, though, that's for sure. The others are great in their own ways, don't get me wrong, but it seems that "The Artist" and "Hugo" are going up for the big prize.

I'm not surprised in the least that Scorcese would make a film like this, though. I have this fantasy dinner party in my head where if I could invite anyone alive, it would be Stephen Fry, Tim Gunn, and Martin Scorcese. Aaaaaand there would be me, soaking in the conversation. I would adore listening to Martin Scorcese talk about movies nonstop for hours. The man knows his shit, and it shows.

I'm also surprised Ben Kingsley wasn't nominated for either Best Actor or Best Supporting. (I would think Best Actor, but one never knows with the Academy.) He was phenomenal in the role of George Melies. Eh, their loss. (Asa Butterfield should have gotten a nom, too, but a child actor's chances just aren't as good as they should be.)

Eleven more movies to go. :)
