I just had someone ask me if her package to New Mexico needed a different label, like the international one she needed when she shipped to Puerto Rico. *dies laughing*

I suppose telling her that "New Mexico" is not short for "New and Improved Mexico, With Extra Spicy Accented Action and Whitening Formula!" wouldn't have gone over so well.

Yeah, I lived in good old Albuquerque for awhile, and I heard this story a lot (my favorite version had to do with a soccer team that was placed among the Latin American countries at a tournament).

Okay, yes, it's a small state, population-wise, but it makes the news every now and then (like when it's, say, a swing state in a major election and the vote is too close to call!), and it's a large state space-wise, so if you learned US geography at all, you'd have to notice it. It's also in that weird Four Corners configuration. And Quantum Leap took place there.

OMG...I have to tell you this: When we were in Hawaii back in 2000, we went on this hiking trip with a bunch of other couples. Well, on the way back to the headquarters, this one couple asked our guide if they had the same holidays as we did. When our guide looked at them strange, the woman went on to say something along the lines of "well, we have Christmas and Thanksgiving, what do you celebrate?" Cause, ya know, since Hawaii is a different country and not a state or anything. ::rolls eyes:: Our guide just looked at them and then looked at us - we could just tell he was so trying not to laugh. He then took a deep breath and told them that since Hawaii was part of the US, that they shared the same holidays. After we got out of the van, the hubby and I looked at the guide and he just bust out laughing. Apparently, it's the most asked question by AMERICAN tourists.

I met a guy who thought that New Hampshire was in England... He was very proud of not ever reading American authors, with World According to Garp at his bedside. I got great enjoyment out of mocking him.

Oh my God, when we were in NM last year for Christmas and had to call tech support on our cell phone service, they went, "Where are you?" We answered, "New Mexico," and they said "Okay, um, our coverage only works in the United States."

True Story: This is told much more amusingly by my ex-roommate to whom it happened. She was born in New Mexico and moved to Colorado as a young child. When she went in to get her student aid check at whichever Colorado college she was going to she was asked for her birth certificate, which she had. Then she was asked for her Green Card. Which she does not have NOR NEED. A twenty minute argument broke out over this as the check processor woman argued that she needed to provide a green card and to prove her foreign student status. She explained that she was BORN IN THE U.S.A. She finally got her check when the woman got her supervisor out there and the supervisor explained that New Mexico is indeed a state included in the United States of America.

Many people in line were angry at the delay but MANY more were laughing at the not so bright employee.

I'm a native New Mexican, and I don't know how many times I've been told that I spoke very good English. Or, my personal favorite...

"I didn't know there were white people in Mexico!"
