OMG I LOVE MY VERY-MUCH-ALIVE CASTAWAY SHOW.

Ahem.

So, anyway ...

Jin: Aw, poor baby. Yet another example of the rule that every castaway is not so much evil or bad as simply a pawn of Fate, Jin got stuck in a really bad situation. I marry the girl of my dreams, I sign up to work with her father in the hopes of getting on his good side, and the son of a bitch turns me into a hitman. The thing that sucks about the whole thing is that if Sun knew her father and what he was really like, and if Jin had simply been honest about his father, I don't doubt that they would have been so much happier and breaking up never would have come up.

And as much as I dislike the fact that Jin turned his back on her at the end of the episode, I understand it and it's right for the character. Sun is his dream, and he's suffered under her father for so long knowing in his heart that she was good and not at all like her father. But she lied to him about speaking English, which if it hadn't been a secret wouldn't have been so terrible, and that's a sign of the greater betrayal of what she would have needed to learn it for. I've seen more than one person on my friends list theorize that he knows more English than he's letting on because it seemed as if he knew what Sun was saying to him in English at the end, but that actually cemented my belief that he doesn't. I don't think he came to his decision to leave her because of the content of what she said, but because of what the English she was saying it in represented. They'd stopped speaking to one another in the real world, they'd grown distant, and Sun was getting the impression not only that her father was more dangerous than she'd realized, but that he was as well. What else would she really need English for other than to escape from him and hide out in an English-speaking place?

As for the raft burning and the accusations being flung at him, I sincerely hope that he understands he got his own ass into that situation, which I think he does. By keeping himself and Sun separate from the others, he wouldn't have made them targets. That happened when he continued to make it a point to control and berate her in public. The suspicion directed at him came partly because of his behavior towards Sun and partly because of what his jealousy towards anyone who caught his attention. He was so asking for it.

In other news, Daniel Dae Kim has such lovely cheekbones. Oh, and a decent golf swing. *swoony sigh*

Sun: Oh, Sun. Sweetie, you're awesome and you're cool and I love you to pieces, but you almost had him back from the brink and then you had to go and speak English. *headsmack* C'mere, you poor thing. *gives you a hug* Now, go on, go and play with the other puppies on the island. I'd seriously like to see you have a grownup conversation with someone who's not Jin or Michael or Kate. *shudder*

Michael: Michael, did you ever see a little movie called Castaway? No? Okay, let me give you a little advice. It's very nice that you want to bring your son on your raft and get off the island. Herein lies your problem. If you're going to be on that boat a while -- and God knows that in the middle of the Pacific, boy, are you ever -- then you're going to need someone who can help you catch fish and prepare them. And who can do that better than anyone on the island? That's right ... Jin. So maybe it'd be a good idea not to piss him off and beat the crap out of him, right? See, you learned that at the end of the episode, so maybe it'll stick. (Actually, if I'm building my Fantasy Getting Off the Lost Island Team, I want Michael to build the boat, Shannon and her vast sailor-fucking experience to steer and stuff, Jin to catch food for us while we go, and Kate to feed to sharks.)

Walt: You know, kid, when you're not being creepy, you're actually kind of cute. And as understandable as your desire to stay on the island is, I probably wouldn't tell Michael that. I definitely wouldn't tell Michael you burned the raft, but he so wants to show you New York City. Also, stop listening to Locke, because he creeps me the fuck out.

Locke: Stop creeping me the fuck out.

Boone: Hey, you. Yeah, you, the pretty one. If you're not going to fuck your stepsister, then damn it, would you let her nail the Iraqi? Damn it, somebody should screw Sayid senseless, and it might as well be Shannon. If you're still so freaking jealous, then say something. You can't? Oh, right, because you're stepbrother and stepsister. And also, because Shannon's not in love with you, she's still in love with the Iraqi. So either you seduce her, or you KNOCK IT OFF.

Let me just establish that I'm only pissed at you because you jumped up and down on Sayid's heart. STOP THAT. Leave the adorable Iraqi woobie alone. *whaps you upside the head*

Sayid: I have no idea what in the hell you find attractive in Shannon, but you have really nice chemistry, so I won't ask for specifics. All I'd like for you to know was that that kiss was superhot and supersexy and if you could just do that with every other castaway with an optional hot sweaty sex scene by the fire, my hormones would really appreciate it. *swoony*

Shannon: I want to be you when I grow up. Sure, you're bitchy, spoiled, and self-centered, but you also had Sayid's tongue in your mouth, so it evens out.

Charlie and Claire: Whom I'll pair together because they were barely apart during this episode and I squealed every time I saw them together. So, you know, I made that noise often. KISS, DAMN IT. Kate kissed Sawyer and Shannon kissed Sayid, so now Claire, I'd really appreciate it if you'd pounce on Charlie in and make with the Driveshaft molesting. (Close your eyes and pretend you're Billy Boyd. That'll get your nerve up.)

Sawyer: You're sexy, but you are so the last person I'd pick for my Fantasy Getting Off the Lost Island Team. Also, stop hitting people. Kthxbi.

Jack: Quit being a boring asstard. If you could do something for once that was the least bit interesting, that'd be nice.

Kate: See Jack.

Hurley: Have I mentioned how much I love you lately? No? Okay, then. *smoochies* Loveyouloveyouloveyou. You're not book-smart, but you're people-smart, which is just as good. You know exactly who to talk to and how to talk to them, and it's great. Also, you were on Korean TV. I'll bet you've got a much better list of ten things you've done that nobody else you know has done than anybody on my friends list, which is saying a LOT. :)

And you poor thing! You're out of batteries! The day I'm trapped on a desert island and my batteries for my music player run out is the day I go from 0 to clinically insane from 2.3 seconds.

Next week: Someone's pointing a shotgun at Hurley! Stop that! Hurting Hurley sends you straight to Hell, like kicking puppies and spitting on nuns. *nods solemnly*

ICON EDIT: Because God knows I need another Lost icon ...

Hee. :)

EDIT: You know, I just thought of another thing for that ten-things meme that I know for a fact that only one other person on my friends list has done (*waves to [livejournal.com profile] ibanezaxe*): In my high school planetary science class, our teacher took us all into the planetarium, turned off all the lights so we could see the stars, had us all shut up and look up at the ceiling, and made us listen to the entirety of "Stairway to Heaven" just like that. All visits to the planetarium should be like that. :)

Yes, that's it, exactly. And I think it's interesting that so many of them seem to want changes in their lives, changes that are now possible because "everyone gets a new life on this island".

I don't think he came to his decision to leave her because of the content of what she said, but because of what the English she was saying it in represented. They'd stopped speaking to one another in the real world, they'd grown distant, and Sun was getting the impression not only that her father was more dangerous than she'd realized, but that he was as well. Oooh, I like that a lot. I was trying to figure out why she'd switched from Korean to English. I like your idea.

I honestly think she said it in English because she couldn't bring herself to say it to him in Korean. Saying it in English frees her to tell the whole truth, even if he can't understand what she's saying.

I'm in love with the fact that they BOTH wanted to escape to America. Oh, God, I love my non-communicative unbelievably sexy Koreans. *cuddles them both up!* And Jin saying "Boat." to Michael at the end made me grin like the idiot I am, sort of like when Walt and Michael were talking about making a new boat. BONDING. SQUEAL. YAY. BE A DADDY, MIKE!

Now we just need to get our sexy koreans with very nice cheekbones (and other things - mmm, bikini!Sun) talking again. More cuddling, plzkthx.

That's what makes their story so heartbreaking -- if the plane hadn't crashed, they'd be in America, and happy together... so this brings in the question of fate, free will, and reasons. Up until now, every character whose backstory we've been given has some kind of A Reason for ending up on the island, as though they were meant to. But in the case of Jin and Sun, it seems to have created a tragedy, rather than a happy opportunity.

No real analysis here, just intruiged at the open-ended kind of philosophy she show's posing.

I adore this show. Really, I do. Every character (or pair of characters) has a Specific Thing that winding up on the island is going to fix. For Jin and Sun, it'll be the fact that they stopped talking - not communicating is a badnasty thing in a relationship, but now that they're stuck on a desert island, they're gonna have to. Even as upset as Jin is, I don't think he's so stubborn that he wouldn't see the benefit of having Sun translate for him.. and I don't think he's more stubborn than she is, in that she'll probably try to do it for him anyway, eventually.

So when do we find out Jedi Master Locke speaks Korean so he can fix them, I wonder? :D

Definitely. And while we got to hear her deepest thoughts exposed, Jin was standing there listening to her be alien. (It's really that scene that finally convinced me that he doesn't speak English himself.)

Now, having given up his dreams and soul to protect her, she now not only doesn't need him, but has more power/better connections than he does. He's still alone in his linguistic ghetto, but she isn't anymore...and never actually was.

Poor Jin. :-/

Oh, Jin understands English. At least some. He's learned names. Much soon follows.
