Good news: I went shopping today and picked up more mini-discs than I know what to do with.

(I also just typed "mini-discs" both times as "mini-dics" first. Hee. Yes, MINI-DICS(tm), the penises made especially for those of you who can't afford the care and upkeep of a normal-sized penis! And coming soon, FAMILY-SIZE DICS, fun for the whole -- hey! Why are all you all laughing? And what are the Innuendo Police doing knocking on my door?!)

In any event, I now have twenty blank mini-discs and nothing to put on them. So, having seen you guys at work on that song titles meme, I know you guys have great taste in music, and I was wondering if you could suggest some bands or singers I might not have heard of that I might like.

Types of music I don't like -- Boy band or teen princess pop, country, techno, death metal, hardcore rap.
Types of music I do like -- Emo, alternative, girl bands, hard rock, classic rock, goth, music that was popular when I was in high school (1991-1995), one-hit wonders.
Bands I have already that I like -- Evanescence, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Our Lady Peace, Linkin Park

Any help would be much appreciated. 'Cause there's mini-discs all over the place now and they want to eat my brains. I tried feeding them popcorn, but did they eat it? Noooo ...

Hmmm. I listen to a whole hell of a lot, from Early Renaissance (recommend anything by the Anonymous 4 and Bimbetta) to classic rock and even (some) country. What I tend to pay attention to a lot are *lyrics*. If the lyrics are bad, I rarely care much for the band/singer.

I'm seconding her Jack Johnson and highly reccomending some Jason Mraz (the song "Remedy" in particular) and Jump, Little Children. For Jump, try getting ahold of "Cathedrals" "My Guitar" or "Come Out Clean." They have a bunch of great stuff though.
I also reccomend Tinkers Punishment. Very emo. Try "Why Can't You Ever Let It Go" "What You Say" and "I Hope You're Right."

okay. I'm gonna go out on a limb here.. I don't know if you've ever heard any jrock (genre).. but there's a lot of music Western people just don't get to hear. XJapan, Yoshiki, hide, Dir en grey, Malice Mizer, Gackt, L'arc-en-ciel.. er.. um.. Pierrot...

They do sing in Japanese (they.. are.. you know.. Japanese.).. but the songs grow on you. Like a benevolent cancer. :D

If you want to try it out, go for J-rock - all the bands/artists irishblessing recommended up there (I particularly recommend Gackt, X Japan, hide, Malice Mizer, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Pierrot, GLAY, Kagrra and Shiina Ringo.) are great. Again, their music is in Japanese, and when they do use English it's a fairly dubious form of it. So, be warned. :)

As for English-language music: Placebo, Sleater-Kinney, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Kidneythieves, The Distillers, Rufus Wainwright, HIM, Cibo Matto, and Veruca Salt are all great.

You must listen to Guster. They remind me quite a bit of Coldplay, only happier, and GOD they're great. Definitely download 'What You Wish For'. Beautiful song. Perhaps the Manic Street Preachers as well -- start off with 'Ocean Spray'.
