Dear hair dye companies,

You know what would really help? If you would make hair dye packages big enough for people who don't have incredibly short hair. Because seriously, my hair doesn't even reach my shoulders and I have to buy two boxes of dye to get the job done? What the fuck, man?

Sincerely,

Me

That's weird because I keep mine a little longer than chin length (ideally, sometimes I'm too lazy to get it cut) and I always end up with a ridiculous amount of dye left.

I tried to use only one bottle but I ended up with big patchy spots so now I have to use two. I think it's because my hair's a wee bit thick.

What they really need is a small box, a medium box, and a large box, depending on the length of your hair. Honestly, a medium box of dye would be perfect for me at this point.

That size idea would be perfect. The few times I dyed my hair (never again, thank you :P), I ended up throwing out half of it.

Me too. I have shoulder length and I throw out at least 1/4 of it.

That's why I'm thinking about hennaing my hair - it's waist length and very thick. I'd need like five boxes of hair dye.

You ain't just whistlin' dixie.

I have really thick hair. One box was not enough to do the job before the locs. Now? I shudder to think. It'd take four or five.

I have extremely thick, coarse hair that goes past my shoulders. When I tried to dye my hair, two barely covered it. I finally went to a salon for a glaze and was so relieved. Saving myself the pain and suffering = priceless.

I've got normal thickness hair that goes past my shoulders, but I only do my roots. Granted, I do them every 2 or 3 months (lol) so I always end up throwing away either 1/3 or 1/4 of it. And that's after spreading it down into the hair that doesn't need to be dyed, just so it blends. *shrug* Everything works differently for different people. =)

I have fine hair, but there's a TON of it. The last time I got my hair done, we went to a salon supply store and bought 3 bottles (in two colors), and used it ALL. I never realized how crazy my hair was till then. The HORROR, dude!

Up until a couple of years ago, I had hair down to my ass. When I talked my sister into dyeing it blue, she had me buy four or five bottles of blue dye and we wound up only using one and a fraction of another bottle. I still have blue dye left after six months of touchups. (Largely because I was only rebleaching my roots as they grew in natural color and applying all the fresh dye at the roots and trusting in its tendency to rinse downwards in every shampooing to keep the rest of it vivid. This worked very well and conserved dye.)

When I dyed black to hide the blue for a new temp job, I bought two bottles and wound up only needing one. So when I bleached the shit out of my hair six months after that to get rid of the black dye and wound up variegated (white blond, golden blond, orange and even a bit of pink) and realized I'd need to get some strawberry blond dye to equalize the colors, I bought only one bottle and wound up running out just as I was finishing up. Still, it got the job done. (Though two months later I wound up getting my hair chopped from butt-length to chin-length, since I'd been conditioning the crap out of it and it was still breaking off and breaking off and breaking off. The day I was brushing it out for my shower and realized it was so thin I could see the pattern of the wallpaper behind it in the mirror, I had Mom chop it for me. Pity I didn't do it after that first bleaching -- would have saved me some trouble in getting the color to something less embarassingly obviously a bleaching problem, as well as saving on hair dye and exotic conditioning treatments.)

It's down to the middle of my back now, and oddly two-toned between the remnants of the bleach job and my natural caramel color. I kept saying I'd equalize it and get rid of the two-toning with a shade of dark blonde close enough to my natural color to blend as it grew out, but at this point I think I'm going to wind up just getting the last of the lighter color trimmed off and steer clear of messing with color until I get enough grey to want to hide it. (Or until I get another job that lets me have blue hair, because I really miss it. Though I don't miss the frequent touch ups and the tendency to stain things purple whenever my hair got wet in the week or so after each touchup.)

*commiserates on the trials of thick hair*

I really love those thinning shears that fancy hair places have. I tell them that there's no way they can thin my hair too much and just go to town on it.

I need 3 or 4 because my hair is both very long and quite thick, luckily my sister is now a hairdresser so can make up however much dye she needs.
