Yesterday at work, I was talking to a female co-worker about makeup and mentioned this conversation I had last week on my LJ ...

shemchadash: I have to ask... what is it about men that makes us worth this effort? Some of us don't even shave and yet women use/apply

Rouge, mascara, lipstick, blush, perfume, pierce various portions of your anatomies, and shave/wax painful areas...

WHY?!?

trollprincess: I like to apply makeup for the same reason I dye my hair different colors and get tattoos -- because I like to draw on myself and people look at me funny when I walk around with Sharpie marker on my face.

Captain Asshat then proceeded to butt in and announce that I shouldn't let any man tell me that makeup means nothing, because all men (hey, he was the one who said "one hundred percent of men") care totally about looks in a woman and nothing about personality. (I only boldface that because that's how he said. Taking down Captain Asshat's various bits of wisdom *cough* involve boldface and italics and wild hand gestures you don't get to see.)

Not that I agree or disagree with what he said, I'm just curious what the guys on my friends list have to say about that, in all honesty. (Mostly because I want to know what another guy would have said if he'd been standing there, 'cause it was just me and Silvia standing there quietly wondering why this fuckstick was butting into our casual conversation about absolutely nothing.)

Well, I care quite a bit in looks (in a prospective SO, at least), but certainly not only looks. In fact, if someone is witty and fun to talk with, then for me, she might be worth it even if she's not really good looking. Also, putting on make-up (and I have little to no experience with it) seems much more fun than shaving. Shaving sucks. It is painful. I do it sometimes, because I have to look respectable, and I might do it for a girlfriend (I did shave for my last one), but I certainly don't have to like it and I'll take any opportunity to avoid it.

I would say that personality is more important than looks. Any relationship based on physical attactiveness alone would be shallow and unfulfilling.

The Captain probably can't know but when you accidentally get close enough to a woman to be exposed to personality you learn to care.

About looks I care much, too. But that means I search for anything that is beautiful about a woman. I am pretty sure that is different from the Captain Asshat point-of-view. Or from the relentless observations women sometimes make about themselves (or other women, too.)

It's like a built in soft-focus.
And I could come up with some evolutionary explanation for it, if I only weren't so busy enjoying the sight of all those beautiful people around me :)

Captain Asshat is a dingdong. Most sane men see makeup as a way of making a pretty woman shinier.

Any man who'd reject a pretty woman sans makeup is lying.

Most men keep their opinions to themselves because if a pretty woman is paying attention to you, you don't screw with a good thing

I'm pretty sure he says stuff like this because he's trying to start an argument, but I don't think he realizes that a.) I don't give a fuck, b.) I don't believe him a lot of the time, and c.) saying stuff like this only makes him look like moer of an asshat to everyone else.

I personally consider confidence more important than looks in an indirect kind of way. I think good confidence either creates the illusion of good looks, or improves the perception of someone's looks.
That's my perspective at least.

3> You are born with a certain amount, the rest is personality. Pamela Anderson has larger breasts (or she did) than Sarah Michelle Gellar. Yet, given a choice, most men would choose Sarah because of her personality. Its not what you have, its how confident you are with it.

I think there should be a balance between the looks and the personality. If the personality is good, you can let a few aesthetic flaws slide by. If they look good, but are as dumb as a stump, what's the point? If they're severely unattractive, their personality will only get them so far.

Dunno about how my boyfriend weighs looks vs. personality, but I know he hates it when I wear make-up. He really doesn't like make-up... at all.
