Also, if anybody's got any ideas for an official title for this whole thing other than Dead Earth, I'm all ears.

EDIT: Okay, it's off to bed before the planet starts to take things personally. Remind me when I wake up to tell you guys my theory about Hugh Jackman's gold lame pants really being a clever disguise for the Lord, Our God.

I think people should get max three fandoms to dibs. If they can write their chapters/stories done, then they may have up to three more. They finish those, then they get up to three more...

So stuff isn't all left hanging.

That said, I'm Dibsing Dead Like Me and The Fairly Oddparents.

I think I'll second that. It sounds reasonable.

I think at this rate, we might just do one to start out with. Then if it starts to get bigger (which it's pretty safe to say it might, considering the reaction), everybody can have two.

If we do it like that, then right now, I'm wavering between The Sixth Sense and My Secret Identity. My God, don't even ask me why.

I like the idea of the "Natural Disasters Aplenty" because that creates more variety for the authors to choose from, and therefore variety for the reader.

I picked 'something else' and specific date BECAUSE there is a comet that NASA annouced would hit the earth in August of 2124 . . . but now I can't find the info. So either it was (another) blunder, or it's really going to smack us . . .

If you hate the idea because it's so over-done, just nuke it. Don't care when.

Well. I don't write fanfic, so I don't apply, but instead of a disease killing everybody I'm a bit partial to something more subtle, like a disease turning people crazy or making them sterile. You get the same effect, but without all the nasty smells.

fandom numbers..i think it also depends on the size of the fandom. buffy/angel and hp are HUGE. one or two people should not get to handle that on their own.

That's a good point. I agree, as long as they call characters/situations/locations instead of just having "These ten get to write in BtVS."

On the other hand, would having more writers for the large fandoms drown out the smaller ones? Do we want to encourage diversity over quantity of writers?

Date: 2004-09-14 11:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aliaspiral.livejournal.com
hmmm. we want diversity, but maybe if we cycled the writers in the big fandoms? you get to play with these characters at this point in time for either this many stories, or for this amount of time?

we want all fandoms to get to play..but id rather read a few well written fics in many fandoms than a glut of one or two fandoms. hmm. this will need to be considered.

trollprincess? any ideas?

Hmm ... maybe no more than a certain number of writers in the larger fandoms at the same time? Like, only three writers each for Buffy and HP? And you'd just have to wait your turn like if you'd tried to call a smaller fandom and missed out.

And as for how long you could have dibs on a fandom, you could have it as long as you had a storyline or for three months, whichever came first. If you finished one story and were done, you could toss it back into the pot, but if you had a nice, long storyline to work with, you'd have a good amount of time to do it in.

I thought about the time limit as well, but that might cause problems with story arcs. I mean, what if someone has a fab plot, great writing, etc, and we don't *want* to replace them and end the coolness? Should we do so anyway, for the sake of equality?

My fair side favors the latter, but my inner fangirl fears going from "awesome" to "everything is ruined". It would make the fic jump the shark, in a manner of speaking. However, I'm probably being paranoid. The niche nature of the community will hopefully select out the writers who are really passionate, like on [livejournal.com profile] ithurtsmybrain.

That's my personal opinion, as well. This is supposed to be a massive crossover orgy, not another BtVS/HP/SV apoca-fic with occasional guest stars serving as plot devices.

Well, for the Buffyverse, I figured a good way to divvy it up a bit might be for people to call dibs by location. You couldn't call the whole 'verse, but you could call L.A. or Italy or whatever. Of course, HP is going to be harder. Maybe three characters only from the larger fandoms like that ...

Date: 2004-09-15 01:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com
Location works for Buffy. Smallville has a large fan base and therefore high demand, but the character base is much smaller. I think one person might handle it, unless circumstance split the 'verse into two: for example, Lex and Clark run off to Metropolis, Chloe goes to Gotham, Lana goes to France, etc. Same thing goes for Alias: small group, large fan base, potential for scattering. HP is a nightmare, because you have a large cast, large demand by writers, and a small location.

I wonder how we should handle comic 'verses. There are all sorts of AUs and versions of characters. Maybe just go by popular demand? Decide as the fandoms are brought in?

I'm not a writer but...

I would be fascinated by your take on the universe of "The Handmaids Tale".

Most of the US population becomes sterile, the fundies take over, fertile girls get sold as baby making slaves, the rest of the world looks on in horror, a few brave sluts lead the resistance, smuggling in sex aids from Cuba and Canada.

Question about the "dead in canon dead here" thing. What about the crew at the 4077th, 'cos a)they got to go home at the end what with the Korean war being over and all and b)they're all going to either be old or dead by now - so is that fandom off limits?

Date: 2004-09-15 04:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
Well, if you could find a way to get them into the world, I don't see why not. If you wanted them young, you could always rip through a temporal/spatial rift or simply find some weird way to de-age them. (Say, if you wanted to make one of them Immortal or something. For that, you'd probably have to double-check with whoever dibs Highlander just to make sure you don't trample on their storyline, but that probably wouldn't be a problem with another fandom, I don't think.)

I think you should have it be an expiramental type of bomb something that could habve an effect worldwide. For example, a bomb that soemhow resonates all the world's crytslline structures and shatters them, so that all crystal, glass, ore, gems, and many many structures would go boom.

That would allow for isolated nuclear explosions, the death of most computers, and even the release of diseases from labs and demons from prisons by way of busted containment units.

As far as fandoms go, I think people should get One big fandom but be allowed to choose a small one or two, after the first round of choosing is done. Like you could do My Secret Identity and then maybe My Little Pony as few are likely to ask for it. Or Mission Impossible and then Iron Eagle... something like that.

And My idea for a Name is The Apocalypse Fandom Project.

Ooo I like [livejournal.com profile] illmantrim's name idea - The Apocalypse Fandom Project.

And as for number of fandoms, I'd say one to start out with because if you have 40 or 50 people involved, that's a heck of a lot of fandoms... if each person gets more than one... well...

I'd say for the large fandoms, each writer only gets a few characters (less than 4, maybe?), but you can take an entire small fandom. I like [livejournal.com profile] ilmantrim's suggestion that some global event kills all computers & electronics. It would allow for a variety of local disasters that wouldn't unduly affect other locations (other than the radiation fallout, of course...) If we go for a single global, everyone dies now event, I'd go for some fast-acting disease. Not only does it clear the stage of extraneous non-fandom characters, it provides lots of angst-fodder for characters prone to it (coughangelcough coughcyclopscough).

I think two fandoms is a good number to let people call dibs on, but they can temporarily borrow others for crossover episodes, as long as those characters aren't committed to be doing something else at the time.
