Governor Jeb Bush seeks to take custody of Terri Schiavo.

I ... I ... I just ... *headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*

EDIT: And today's reason that I'm going to Hell is that in thinking about this development, all I can think is that "A crusading governor takes custody of a vegetative woman" is the worst sitcom idea ever.

"I believe that in a case such as this, the legislative branch, the executive branch, ought to err on the side of life, which we have," the president said.

How about not erring at all? How's that sound?

I suppose trying to explain to him that existence and life are two entirely different concepts would go right over his head.

Maybe he'll also take custody of all the unwanted children he and his party want to force women to have by denying them the right to reliable birth control and safe and legal abortions.

In regards to the Bush administration, there is really never a thing as too much snark :) Besides, it was well placed and intelligent snark, which of course is always good.

Which is ridiculous because honestly, who's going to remember this when congressional midterms roll around in a year? Especially that since with a voice vote, they can't prove how they voted or if they were even there.

I hear ya. I especially love how he's trotting out that doctor that claims the diagnosis is entirely wrong. Why do I have the odd suspision that he went through every doctor he could until he found the Bush family version of Dr. Nick?

I've given up trying to think about this case, because it's just so frustrating. :/

But I wanted to make a comment on your edit. :D I'll see you in hell, because I think it'd be an interesting sitcom. That's My Bush!: Florida or something.

I did the same thing when I saw it. The Bush family seems awfully selective about when to err on the side of life - what was the rate of executions in Texas again while W reigned?

This whole thing has gotten so out of hand on some many levels - it's hard to tell what to be appallled at first

I think they need to get Dr. House down there to straighten them out... you would totally love that show.

This whole thing just makes me sad.

I wish they'd just give her an injection. I can't imagine wanting to be alive in that state.

I had a huge argument with my suitemate today about the case. She thinks they should keep her alive because she can still "smile and interact" with people. Can she? I almost think it would be WORSE to be in a vegetative state and be AWARE of it. I believe that they should allow her to die, but this is from living with a terminally ill father who, while he didn't have assisted suicide, died in such a painful way that it became unbearable for all of us to watch it happen, and I would never wish that upon anyone.

Funny how differently two Christians can think on a matter (my suitemate and I)...

The thing is, the responses that they're claiming she's capable of are the same sort of responses which that two-headed baby's extra head from a few months back was capable of before it was removed, because it had the same amount of brain as Terri Schiavo.

Really? Last I'd read, they didn't know if the second head had its own brain or not.

Unless you heard something more definitive, I think it's entirely possible the second head had more brain power than Terri Schiavo.

I'm guessing your suitemate has never experienced a loved one dying slowly and painfully from an incurable illness. It's easy to make blanket pronouncements when one has never had to live with the reality. :(

Honestly, I think the worst part is our state and national government thinking they have the RIGHT to intervene in a private family decision. ::spits in disgust:: I hope ol'Jeb lives to see a politically opposed governor and president interfere in his private medical decisions.

I'm sincerely hoping that this situation drags down the Bush family's approval ratings like mad. Oh, sure, it might work with their base, but their reaction also seems to be repelling a lot of people who voted Dubya in in November.

All that's left for the Bush Boys to try is to invoke the medieval right of droit du seigneur and take the girl as their love slave.

I mean, they really do think they have the divine right of kings, don't they?

All we can hope for is by the time the twins are coronated 20-odd years from now, they'll still be too busy partying to pay any attention to these tough moral issues. "Feeding tube? Like, what-everrr."

Take heart. Judge Greer refused DCF's petition for custody. And the Florida Senate caught the clue bus and refused to pass another round of unconstitutional legislation.

The thing that's worrying me now is that if she dies on Friday or Sunday we ain't seen nothing yet. Her parents' "spiritual advisor" has *already* drawn the parallels between Terry and Jesus...I don't want to see where this is going to end up if she dies on Good Friday.

Wait. Someone is *actually* comparing a brain-dead, cerebrally atrophied sack of meat that has HAD to be on life support for the last 15 years to keep Death's cold hand at bay (sorry, but that's what she is at this point) to Jesus?

I now have this truly evil hope that she *does* die on Good Friday, then rises on Easter and is all "DUDES! I was supposed to start this Second Coming thing YEARS ago!"

Ah... Poor Jebbie has been reading too much Fic about the joys of sex with the vegitative.

Don't forget that he expressed his opinion that all the doctors are wrong and she's not in a vegitative state.

I wonder how much he paid that neurologist to look at her once and see edited video tape and then pronounce her non-vegitative?

Y'know what I thought this morning? The only way to get Jeb to stop "putting Terri first" is to get Terri knocked up. Then he can utterly disregard her while he focuses on "teh baybeee" like he did for that poor retarded woman.
