apocalypsos: (job well done)

Hi, there! Hey, guess what? I can knit!

\o/

Yeah, it only took me a day to go from royally fucking it up to, "Hey, look at that wee little Smurf-sized afghan!"

Now I'm off to make a purple scarf that's as long as I am tall. And after that, gun cozies! (Not because I have guns that need cozying, although I'm perfectly willing to go out and buy a water gun so that I can give it a comfortable loving home and a tiny gun-shaped sweater.)

I really do want to make an afghan when I'm more comfortable with all of this. I've been wanting one that's white and purple and light green like my bedspread and I found the perfect yarn for it but I don't want to just ask my mom to do it if I can. Oh, and also an autumny one I can make during the summer and have ready for fall. And maybe a sweater when I figure out how and my God, I'm already addicted, aren't I? *headsmack* I may have been craftily deprived the past few years without my sewing machine, I think.

Yay! Congrats on getting hooked (heh) so quickly! Are you knitting English or continental style? Have you signed up for Ravelry yet? There's a waiting list, but they're getting people in pretty damn quickly.

Hee, gun cozies!

Heh. I'm tellin' ya, I'm so deprived when it comes to making stuff. I used to sew ALL the time, and watching Project Runway was making it miss it.

Are you knitting English or continental style?

Um ... *checks Wikipedia* English, I guess? I've only got casting on, knitting and purling down so far, so I'm basically just trying to get a lot of practice doing the basic stuff. Which is why I haven't signed up for Ravelry or anything yet. At this point I'm just goofing around getting practice. :)

I need an Emerson knitting icon. Hmm.

I'm sure you'll pick everything else up really quickly. Once you get going, though, it's addictive! :)

Yay, knitting is great! I knew you'd master it!

Heh. Well, I wouldn't say I've mastered it yet, but I'll get the hang of it eventually. ;)

You should have seen my first scarf. It was a complete travesty, and done in the most hideous yarn. Since then I have moved on to bigger and better things, but we all start out saying, "Damn, I forgot how to purl/cast on/pull the yarn out of the stupid skein".

Well, I probably should follow the directions in the book I got with the kit, because there is a pattern for a scarf in there, but at this point I just want to practice the hell out of the basics until I've got some speed going. And since the yarn I've got is purple, which will go perfectly with the winter coat I got for Christmas, scarf! \o/ :)

Yes! Respect for the fundamentals. I find by the time you get to the end of the scarf, you've had plenty of practice.

Hooray knitting!!!

(Warning -- it is something like a crack addiction at times... Mmm, yarn. Especially sock yarn. And making socks. Mmm, socks.)

Heh. Well, I'm not about to go out and knit, like, an entire suit or anything, but I've got the basics down, so. YAY. :)

I totally keep meaning how to learn to do something other than knit a scarf. Essentially, that's all I know how to, and then I go: :(.

Knitting is SO addictive. I think it's kind of like with smoking, that you find yourself needing to do something with your hands at all times or you'll go nuts. And as soon as you see a nice skein of yarn your brain starts to plan project after project and...yeah.

This site has some really nice free patterns: http://garnstudio.com/index_lang.php

Dude, I strongly suggest that you read The Yarn Harlot's blog and books. I think you'd like the humour that she usess (and there's a really funny video on youtube of her talking about going to parties and telling people she's an authour, and their reactions when she tells them it's knitting humour.)

There's also knitty.com for cool free patterns and techniques and stuff, and Ravelry will be having an open house soon if you're not wanting to drink the koolaidsign up just yet.

Also, for a first project I'd suggest a hat- it uses basic techniques, is fun and wearable and it goes pretty fast when, for that first project you want it done NOW. Scarves are great, but after the first few rows or pattern repeats you have the basics and then you still have several more feet to knit before doing something new/different, and binding off.

Thirding both the Yarn Harlot and Knitty. The Harlot's a scream, and extremely nice. She was in Wichita on her last yarn crawl book tour. Read all her books, read her blog archive (I just finished.....hilarious!). And I just wish Knitty published more often! Lots of cool stuff there!

Knitting is textile crack. You'll start hoarding skeins of yarn around your apartment and have about 5 projects going at the same time as any proud addict does.

Congrats!!!

Second Knitty.com, and Ravelry.

OMG gun cozy - I MISS THAT SHOW ALREADY /cry

arm warmers - you seriously need armwarmers. Every knitter needs them - they go fast and look nifty =) I love the wrist warmers from Knitty - fetching is the name of the pattern I believe.

Others have beaten me to pimping Knitty (and Ravelry, and [livejournal.com profile] yarnharlot), so I'll settle for directing you towards Stitch n Bitch as being a really good handbook to get you going on the basics and offering up a nice selection of easy patterns (scarves and otherwise) to start out with, and Stitch n Bitch Nation as being more of the same only with more advanced techniques.
