A shelter dog? I think that would be awesome if they can manage to find one Malia's not allergic to.

(You have no idea how giddy this puppy makes me. You'd think *I* was getting the puppy. I have a new president I love, but OMG PUPPY! \O/)

I'm sure shelters all over the country are calling trying to get him to adopt from them.

If there's a dog in a shelter anywhere in this country that she's not allergic to; they'll get one.

I'm really pleased they're looking for a rescue or shelter dog instead of a breeder. It would have been so disappointing to me if they'd gone to a breeder.

The whole family is so totally adorable; adding a puppy to those little girls might just make the White House implode into a huge black hole of cuteness. :)

He answers questions. Cogently. In FULL SENTENCES! He didn't even make up any stupid cockamamie words. I had forgotten a president could do that.

If hypoallergenic dogs have been around a while, surely there will be one that an owner had to give up to a shelter. (Hypoallergenic cats are so newly bred that they're aren't very many of them yet and they cost about $5,000!)

It's awesome to have a president who actually speaks not only coherently, but eloquently. Plus, he thinks before he opens his mouth. That's going to take some getting used to.

I think he's our JFK. Let's just pray the same fate doesn't befall him.

The similarities are amazing; even if you look beyond party affiliation and ideology. Both are handsome, great speakers, inspiring leaders who are devoted to their families. Obama is set to usher in a new age the same way JFK did.

People forget that before Jack Kennedy; it was unthinkable that an Irishman or a Catholic would be elected president, yet JFK was both. It's not quite the same degree of a first from our perspective; but it was huge at the time.

She may not be allergic to all dogs. Dogs with hair, instead of fur, tend to cause allergic reactions in fewer people.

Yeah, I hear you, that's a big worry. Let's hope the technological advances we've had since 1963 will help the people who guard him do a better job. A lightweight, super-strong bullet-proof vest would be nice.

What amuses me about the JFK situation is that voters were worried the Pope would rule the US through him, that religion would worm its way into the political process; everyone was adamant that there be a strict separation of church and state. JFK had to assure the voters that religion would have no bearing on his term in office. Now we get politicians who run on their religion, and heaven help the politician running for high office who assures the voters that he won't allow religious considerations to affect his decisions, he'll immediately be tarred as a "godless atheist" by his opponent in TV ads. (We're looking at you, Elizabeth Dole!)

... he answers questions. Without dodging all that much. And when he goes you get the idea it's not "oh, you won't like it" or "we haven't thought of that" but "we're still looking and we don't have an answer yet but when we do you'll know." And it's done intelligently and in full sentences with actual words.

...

...

There have to be shelters lining up to offer him hypoallergenic dogs.

Okay, if I didn't already love him, "many shelter dogs are mutts like me" would have killed me :D And, of course, that he's looking for a shelter dog is awesome.

As the person above notes, if there is a shelter anywhere in the United States that has a hypoallergenic dog, they're already calling around to try and get the Obamas to adopt it :)

There are loads of breed-specific rescue groups, as well. I remember reading that Malia wants a goldendoodle - I'm sure there's one somewhere that needs a home!

And yes, the "mutt" comment made my heart melt just a little bit more. :)

It's a big country filled with dog lovers who'd love to find the next president's kids a dog...I'm sure it'll be fine :D

Sweetest family evar, omg.

I'm quite sure that between Chicago, D.C., and the rest of the US, they can find a good shelter doggie.

I love how he answers the dog question mock-solemnly ('This is a major issue') without hardly breaking his deadpan, scrupulously laying out the two criteria that must be met.

I think his mind actually works that way, which must make him annoying at home sometimes:

'Honey, what kind of sandwich do you want?'

'I'll try to speak to that on two levels. On one hand, I haven't had roast beef in a while. Roast beef is slim and good for my heart, and we're looking into that as a possible sandwich meat. On the other hand, I'm not all that hungry right now because I had a big muffin for breakfast. Muffins, as you know, can be quite filling —'

'GODDAMMIT DO YOU WANT A SANDWICH OR NOT'

Yay! I was hoping he'd go with a shelter dog, because any time there's a movie about Chihuahuas or Dalmatians or whatever thousands of morons go out and buy them with no idea of how high-strung, high-maintenance, and expensive they're going to be, and then you end up with thousands of stray and abandoned Chihuahuas or Dalmatians. So if Obama gets a shelter dog...at least there's a chance there'll be a run on those instead of profits for puppy mills.

I am SO sick of hearing about this. I mean, it's cute and all, and I'm glad they're getting a dog from a shelter rather than shelling out for a pup from an unethical breeder (there ARE no ethical goldendoodle breeders, and even labxpoodle people are almost universally sketchy). But just... argh. Gina Spadorfi on petconnection totally summed up my thoughs!
